Curtain Course for Beginners​

Course details

Learn how to measure different styles of windows and discuss the suitability of different curtains and headings, as well as the different styles of fabrics.

You’ll learn about the types of curtain tracks and poles available and when to use them. You’ll estimate fabric quantities for plain and patterned fabrics and understand the different ways to cut fabric and lining correctly.

Practice the different stitch techniques and how to sew true and false mitres. Insert and cover weights, and put together a lined curtain sample with a machine tape heading.

A basic level of sewing is recommended to get the most out of this course.

Curtain Course for Intermediates​

Course details

Recap the stitch techniques and how to measure different types of windows. Learn how to pattern match perfectly and understand the benefits of interlinings and how to insert them into a curtain.

You’ll construct different hand finished headings (single, double and triple) and put together a lined and interlined curtain with a double, triplet and euro heading.

Curtain Course for Experts​

Course details

You’ll recap stitch techniques, as well as learning how to add a contrast or beaded trim or braid border. You’ll learn how to pleat to a pattern perfectly, insert wave headings and you’ll be given additional tips and tricks along the way.

Roman Blind Course for Beginners​

Course details

Learn how to measure different styles of windows and discuss the suitability of different roman blinds. You’ll discuss the different styles of fabrics and the different types of tracks available, as well as the importance of child safety.

Estimate fabric quantities for plain and patterned fabrics at multiple windows and understand ways to cut fabric and lining correctly, including working out rod pocket placement.

Learn and practice different stitch techniques and put together a lined roman blind on a track following child safety standards.

Blinds intermediates

Roman Blind Course for Intermediates

Course details

You’ll recap stitch techniques and learn how to measure for bay windows.

Understand how to calculate rod pockets for cascade blinds and add interlining and interlock roman blinds so that no stitching is visible.

Add buckram to stabilise the top of the blind and put together a lined and interlined blind onto a track following child safety standards.

You’ll need a little experience with a sewing machine or have will have previously done our beginners course.

Course details

You’ll start by recapping stitch techniques before adding side flaps and making a small over pelmet. You’ll put together a roman blind with flaps on a track following child safety standards.

Drinks and snacks are provided as well as all the equipment and materials needed to complete your course. However, you will need to bring your own lunch.

Students are welcome to bring their own main fabric if they want.

You can pay for your course in two ways – with Stripe at the time of booking or by bank transfer before the booking.

If 2 or more courses are booked, you’ll receive a 10% discount overall. You’ll be expected to pay in full when booking.

Courses will start promptly at 9.45am and finish around 5pm, though you’re encouraged to arrive at 9:30am to get settled in and acquainted with the studio and machinery. If you’re taking part in a group course, there will be 3 – 4 people maximum.

The first option is the main car park, which is located near the entrance to the mills. This car park offers ample space for visitors and is free of charge.

it’s important to note that some of these parking spots may be time-limited or require a parking permit, so be sure to check the signage before parking.

If you’re visiting on a weekend or during peak periods, it’s worth noting that the main car park can get quite busy, so it’s a good idea to arrive early to secure a space. Additionally, there are several public transport options available, including buses and trains, which may be a convenient alternative depending on your location.

There are a number of hotel  and B&B’s nearby for anyone looking to stay in the area. Darley Abbey Mills is home to a number of restaurants and a wine bar – perfect for relaxing after your course!
